Building the New Sugarhouse

The New Sugarhouse
The first sugarhouse that we have since outgrown.

We out-grew the old sugarhouse and decided it was time to mill the wood to build a new one. It needed to be big enough for a heated room to accommodate our new RO and have more access around the Small Brothers Maple Sugar Evaporator 2X6 (Lightning). The evaporator is wood-fired with a raised flue. The syrup pan is 2X2 and has 4 compartments and is able to draw off on each side. Matt designed a blower fan for it facing the loading doors and the front pan for hotter heat.

We milled most of the pine for the sugar house in a few days and considering there were three of us involved in various stages, we made fast progress. The board & batten design is our signature build. The windows and doors were free on Craigslist.

The building is 16′ x 16′ with an additional overhang to have some of the wood undercover. Inside, we have enough room to have another supply of it too.

There’s so much more room to move around the evaporator!

Hoping for a good season!
